Better Health Care for the Citizens
The solution at the County Council of Kalmar enables the municipality and county to better share information, planning and coordination. As a result, the health care providers gets a better overall picture of the patient which contributes to a higher quality of care and improved patient safety. With a more efficient workflow, instances of work duplication can be erased and thus costs are decreased – allowing more time to health care rather than administration.

A Thorough Preparatory
In 2006 the regional federation Kalmar conducted a feasibility study within the EU project "The digital society", and then a pilot project (”Barnhälsodatapiloten”, Children’s Health data pilot) during the years 2009 – 2010. One of the conclusions of this work was that irrespective of infrastructure, operating systems must be built to make them sectoral and available cross-border so all parties can work together regardless of platform. The solution must maintain high security to avoid jeopardizing patient safety, and be easy for care providers to use.

Easy and secure collaboration with Nordic Edge and Citrix
The solution was formed in the autumn of 2010 and is based on a combination of Nordic Edge Federation Services and Citrix which together allows the county to securely and seamlessly give access to the use of the digital journal Cosmic Link to municipalities and private care providers. To achieve high security standards, electronic ID cards, SITHS cards, are used in combination with automatic registration of users which in itself provides a secure and administration free system. The testing phase is now over and as of March 2011, the system is in production.
