Hitachi Data Systems Records Highest Growth in Western European External Disk Storage System Market

New IDC Research Reveals 58 Percent Year-on-Year Sales Increase
Driven by Strong Hitachi VSP and Hitachi AMS Demand

Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501), recorded the highest year-on-year growth in the Western European external disk storage system market, according to new research from IDC.

Reflecting the ongoing success of Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP), which offers best-in-class performance, capacity and open, multivendor storage virtualization for large businesses and enterprises, HDS experienced a year-on-year sales increase of 58 percent in Western Europe during calendar Q2 2011. This figure was nearly three times that recorded by its nearest competitor. In addition, the steady uptake of  Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage (AMS) 2000 family has spearheaded growth in the midrange market, further helping to bolster overall sales figures.

To date, Hitachi VSP has been deployed across a variety of industry sectors within the region, including data centres (GRZ IT Center Linz in Austria); insurance (Schweizerische Mobiliar in Switzerland); and the media (JP/Politikens Hus in Denmark). The benefits of Hitachi VSP are clear to see: a recent survey conducted by TechValidate, an independent research organisation specialising in the provision of third-party customer data, found that more than half of enterprises powered by Hitachi VSP have increased performance by up to 50 percent. Additionally, organisations expect to save up to 50 percent on administration and energy costs compared with competitive offerings, making Hitachi VSP the most efficient enterprise storage platform on the market today.
Daniel Bizo, research analyst at IDC’s European Storage Group commented: ”HDS’ expansive strategy, its reputation for high quality and service standards and the technical appeal of VSP propelled the company’s sales.”

Recent Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform Milestones
Alongside Hitachi Command Suite management software, which can scale many virtual machines and manages even the largest infrastructures and application deployments, Hitachi VSP received the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s prestigious Machine Design Award sponsored by Business and Technology Daily News in Japan. Hitachi VSP was also awarded the iF Product Design Award for 2011, China Information World 2010 Editors’ Choice for ”Innovative Product,” and the 2011 Information Age Data Centre Award – all of which champion superior technology products and designs for the data centre.
