INTEL: Next Generation Research explored at Intel Ireland
Minister Lenihan said ”the theme of this conference could not be more relevant as the development of the ”smart” or innovation-based economy is the key challenge facing Ireland. Clearly, industry-academic partnerships and collaborative research is an important means to address the challenges of making Irish enterprise more competitive, and to enable it to exploit new economic opportunities”.
The broad array of speaker topics also included perspectives from academia and Day One keynote speaker Prof. Brian MacCraith, President of Dublin City University in Ireland, addressed the audience about the role of the modern University in Socio-Economic Transformation, emphasising the importance of a focus on translational research and its direct engagement with grand challenges of societal relevance – issues such as health, the environment, energy needs, the ageing population, and water supply.
The first day of the three day conference event also included keynote addresses from Intel Vice President, Sales and Marketing Group, Gordon Graylish and Dr. Genevieve Bell, who is the Director of Intel’s recently formed Interaction and Experience Research Lab.
Creating the next generation of technology experiences begins with understanding what people love about their everyday lives. In her address, Dr. Bell discussed the complex relationships between technology and society. ”I am really interested in the interplay between technology and cultural practice – and the ways in which this will shape our futures.” Dr. Bell emphasised that companies must recognise that different societies may have different expectations, rules and levels of acceptance toward technology and her lab’s charter is to understand these differences in order to create unique user experiences that people will love.

The conference continues over the coming days with detailed track sessions aligned with the conference research areas, workshops focused on Nanotechnology and Design Science, a poster session displaying over 100 research abstracts and an Intel technology showcase.
