2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the term "computer virus" being coined by an American computer science student called Fred Cohen. Cohen came up with the term ‘virus’ in 1983 upon creating a program that could replicate itself and "infect" other computers.

The computer virus – and the other types of malware that have followed it – has had a profound effect on the technology-driven world we now live in, from the early days of malware spawned by amateur hackers to the dangerous cyber weapons used by today’s online criminal gangs, activists and foreign governments.

More often than not, for every advance in technology, malware has been developed in parallel to exploit it. Has this stifled innovation or actually been a spur for better, more secure products?
